Sleepy Hallow

I adjusted the heavy gym bag draped over my shoulder and regretted the bright idea to bring it along. Likely it held nothing more than Maury’s sweaty socks.

On the off chance it contained a clue to his death, I ignored my discomfort. If I ever found a moment alone and away from prying eyes, I would conduct a proper search.

“Do you want me to carry the duffle for you?” Jay ran his fingers through his damp, blonde hair.

“I’m fine.” I twisted to the stragglers laboring behind us. The march along the blacktop road brought out the complainer in everyone. “I wish they would pick up the pace.”

“Right? Bro, I’m practically moving in slow motion.” He busted into a mechanical man stride.

Mist mixed with the heavy air to form a thick, humid fog. Visibility decreased to a few hundred feet. “At least the cornfield killer hasn’t made another appearance.”

“Yet.” Jay’s pale blue eyes cut through the darkness. “What do you think this guy wants?”

“To silence witnesses.” I shrugged. “Hard to say without all the facts.”

“Why though? We saw nothing.”

“Sophia mentioned the knife whizzing by her head. What do you remember about the incident?”

“I think I blocked it from my mind.”

“This must be tougher for you since you were friends with Maury outside of his studio gig.”

Jay skidded to a stop. “You heard about the acting school?”

“Why didn’t you mention your relationship with the victim?”

“I panicked, plain and simple.” His cheeks puffed. “When we crashed and everybody screamed about a murder, I got spooked. I admit it was stupid, but I didn’t want to look suspicious.”

“As opposed to how you look now?”

“Wait, you think I’m involved in Maury’s death?” He spread his arms. “What about Korn?”

“Our night stalker didn’t ride behind Maury in the golf cart.”

“I was jammed to the far-right hanging off the edge. If I did something to the driver, the other two would notice.”

I started walking before the others narrowed the gap to within earshot. “Did you panic when you saw your acting coach driving a carpool for the stars?”

“Why would I?”

“Because the connections Maury promised are of no more value than a janitor’s contacts. Your fast track to stardom disappeared.”

“You got it all wrong.” He shoved his hands in the pockets of faded blue jeans. “No animosity to the guy.”

“So, you benefited from his classes?”

“Absolutely. He was a genius.”

“You would recommend the school to someone starting?”

“Money well spent.”

“Why did you warn Deborah off?”

“She told you about that?” His Adam’s apple bobbed. “Alright, I need to confess something.”

“What?”

“My snobbery got the best of me this afternoon when she asked about Maury’s acting school. I told her not to bother because the classes weren’t leading anywhere for me. One of those bummed days of self-doubt.”

“He scammed you?”

“No, I experienced a moment of temporary weakness and doubted my dream. Deborah caught me at a bad time.”

“Did you share your disappointment with Maury?”

“I never had the chance to pull him for a sidebar. Every time I tried, Sophia interrupted with something to nag about.
